When traveling abroad, Russian citizens should remember about the risk of being arrested in third countries and extradited to the US. This was told to RIA Novosti by Grigory Lukiyantsev, Director of the Department for Multilateral Human Rights Cooperation at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).
“Many states, not only in the European Union, but also in a broader context, have certain obligations on handing over and extradition [of people]. All this must be taken into account when assessing the risks that people may face when traveling abroad,” Lukiyantsev noted.
The Russian official noted that the Russian MFA does not decide where Russian nationals can travel and where not. The ministry can only advise against visiting certain countries if Russian citizens believe that they may have problems with the American or European authorities.
According to data published by the Russian MFA, countries with a high risk of arrest of Russian nationals on US requests include most of Europe and Latin America, as well as Australia, Canada, Armenia, Israel, the Maldives, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Fiji, Sri Lanka, Liberia, and Morocco.
At the same time, the Russian MFA notes that this list does not include all countries that have extradition treaties with the US.
