The possibility of further postponement—until 2030—of the implementation time frames for individual elements of the single electricity market of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is being discussed on the union’s platform. This is stated in a document published on the website of the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan.
The ministry recalled that in 2024, it was decided to move the launch date of the EAEU single energy market from January 1, 2025 to January 1, 2027. “At the same time, the EAEU platform is also discussing the possibility of further postponing the time frames for the implementation of individual elements of the market, including organized trading mechanisms, until 2030,” states the document on the implementation of the concept for the development of the electric power industry of Kazakhstan for 2023-2029.
The document by the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan noted that “in general, the implementation of the EAEU single electricity market requires further coordinated work of the member states to approximate national legislation, eliminate existing barriers, and develop common approaches to market operation.”
The protocol on amendments to the agreement on the formation of the EAEU single electricity market was signed in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, in May 2019 by the leaders of the five EAEU member states: Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.
The document establishes the legal basis for the formation, operation, and development of the single electricity market of the EAEU, enabling the use of the existing advantages of parallel operation of the energy systems of the Eurasian Economic Union member states at a qualitatively new level.
