The Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor), following talks with the head of the Food Safety Inspectorate of Armenia, Tigran Petrosyan, will conduct inspections of some Armenian enterprises, the department reported.

In particular, at the request of the Armenian side, Rosselkhoznadzor will inspect those Armenian enterprises from which supplies to Russia were suspended due to suspicions of importing counterfeit fish products, allegedly of European origin.

Rosselkhoznadzor explained that the preliminary inspection of imported rainbow trout, including photographs and analysis of materials, raised doubts about the origin of the raw materials from which the product was produced.

The rainbow trout declared in the veterinary documents did not correspond to the imported fish according to morphological characteristics. It had an unusual coloration for this species and an abnormally large weight of more than 5.5 kg. This indicates that the fish belongs to another species of salmonids or other species of trout, which is a sign of product counterfeiting. Salmon farming and sale are more typical for European countries, and such products may be subject to special economic measures (sanctions), Rosselkhoznadzor noted.

In addition, as a result of the agreements reached, at the request of the Armenian side, in order to ensure the supply of truly Armenian and phytosanitary safe products, Rosselkhoznadzor is planning to conduct inspections of Armenia’s plant-growing enterprises.

Rosselkhoznadzor expressed concern about the increase in the detection of quarantine objects for the EAEU member states in products subject to quarantine control entering Russia from Armenia.
