The US interests in Armenia are overseeing the border with Iran and causing pain to Russia,. The second president of Armenia and the candidate for prime minister from the "Hayastan [(Armenia)]" bloc, Robert Kocharyan, told this to reporters in Vayk town Monday.
Responding to a question about US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s short visit to Armenia scheduled for Tuesday, the politician suggested that this visit is dictated by the same desire to hurt Russia.
When asked whether such a show of support is an attempt at interference, Kocharyan noted that it is certainly an attempt at interference, and there have been many such attempts in recent months. The politician recalled that a similar situation existed in the recent Hungarian elections. Everything got mixed up, and what was considered reprehensible 15-20 years ago is not considered so now, Kocharyan noted.
Referring to the statement about signing documents with Rubio, Robert Kocharyan noted that he did not know what documents were being discussed.
“My impression is that this is part of the [Armenian parliamentary] election campaign. I assume that they [i.e. the US] persistently want to do everything so that [Armenian PM] Nikol Pashinyan does not lose the elections. I do not see that the US has significant interests in Armenia. There is one interest: to oversee the border with Iran and cause pain to Russia, so that they replace Russia in the region with Turkey. Is this in our [i.e. Armenia’s] interests? I think not,” Kocharyan concluded.
