In the last decade or two, the SUV segment has exploded, and this trend is down to one thing: SUVs are among the most practical four-wheelers out there. Part of it comes down to space and comfort; the high seating position, good ground clearance, and larger tires make it comfortable around town and ready for weekend adventures.

When you want a rugged SUV that’s not only comfortable and capable off-road but can last a long time, Subaru is a no-brainer choice. The Japanese manufacturer has made a name for its rugged, adventure-ready vehicles equipped with standard Symmetrical all-wheel drive and the horizontally opposed boxer engine. At the same time, it’s among the most reliable manufacturers out there, building some of the most dependable cars in their respective segments.
That theme of capability, comfort, and reliability follows into the brand’s SUV lineup as well. And there are many options to pick from. Currently, Subaru offers 7 SUVs, which start as low as $28,445. From humble subcompacts to three-row models, and from gas-only to hybrids and EVs, there's a Subaru SUV for everyone. Each SUV offers a different flavor of performance and capabilities, yet all retain Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD system and comfortable interiors.
So, it’s no surprise that when you want an SUV that is both comfortable and reliable, it can be confusing to pick the best model of the Subaru lot. Fortunately, that need not always be the case. There is one Subaru SUV that manages to hold its head above the rest when it comes to reliability, and despite its subcompact dimensions, it manages to offer plenty of interior space and comfortable features. We’re talking about Subaru’s most affordable offering: the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek.
Thanks to sales that overtook the smaller Crosstrek, the Forester could be the best all-rounder in the range, offering the most balanced package.
The Subaru Crosstrek is the smallest SUV in Subaru’s lineup, but unlike many of its competitors, the Crosstrek likes to go against the grain. Instead of focusing on all-out performance and on-road handling, the Crosstrek is a soft-riding crossover that focuses on core capabilities like reasonable fuel economy, comfortable interiors, and standard all-wheel drive. Powered by a 180-horsepower boxer engine, the Crosstrek also offers plenty of ground clearance and loads of passenger and cargo space.
On paper, it may not look like much, but the Crosstrek consistently ranks among the top of its class, outperforming other subcompact SUVs in various categories. iSeeCars recognizes the Crosstrek as the best family subcompact SUV, which shows its suitability for families thanks to its features, space, and comfort. The Crosstrek also sits at the very top in its off-road capabilities. It’s these things that make the Crosstrek stand out and among the best in its class, thanks to its balance of quality, performance, and value.
The Subaru Crosstrek starts at $28,445 for the base model and goes up to $35,245 for the adventure-ready Wilderness trim. That’s already outstanding value, though we’d recommend stepping up to the Premium trim if you were thinking of picking the base model. The Premium trim adds a larger infotainment display, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and roof-rail crossbars, which is worth the small markup over the base model.
This overlooked hybrid SUV delivers 45 mpg, standard AWD, and more power than its gas-only sibling for under $31,000.
The Subaru Crosstrek is a highly reliable subcompact SUV that’s known for its longevity. In fact, Subaru claims that 96 percent of all Crosstreks sold in the last 10 years are still on the road. J.D. Power backs this reliability claim, earning the Crosstrek the top spot for dependability and projected resale value among small SUVs. The Crosstrek was named The Most Dependable Small SUV in America in the JD Power 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, ranking the highest in J.D. Power reliability among small SUVs.
According to RepairPal, the Crosstrek is the most reliable compact SUV, and iSeeCars ranks it at 8.6 out of 100. The latter ranks it at 8.6 out of 100 and estimates an average lifespan of 13.3 years or 165,089 miles, with a 22.5 percent chance of reaching 200k miles. According to the publication, the Crosstrek can easily pass the 200k mark if the factory-recommended maintenance schedule is strictly followed.
In terms of maintenance, the Crosstrek is slightly more expensive than an average compact SUV. CarEdge estimates a maintenance and repair cost of $8,460 during its first ten years of service, which is more than the industry average by $294. This is backed by Subaru’s warranty, which is in line with its competitors. The Crosstrek is backed by a limited warranty of 3 years or 36k miles and a powertrain warranty of 5 years or 60k miles.
The new Subaru Outback is boxier, roomier, and packed with more features than ever.
Reliability isn't the Crosstrek's only forte. It also ranks high for space and comfort, with iSeeCars recognizing it as the best family subcompact SUV. Step inside, and you’ll be met with a cabin that’s all about comfortable utility. Despite its subcompact dimensions, the cabin is pretty spacious, with the front compartment being spacious enough for people of all shapes and sizes. Even the controls are said to be easy to access.
At the back, the second-row seatback features a 60/40 split-folding design and offers 36.5 inches of legroom, which is above average for the class. Cargo space is a respectable 20 cubic feet behind the second row and 55 cubic feet with the second row folded down. This beats the Mazda CX-30. All in all, the Subaru Crosstrek is a spacious, comfortable subcompact SUV that serves as a dependable family SUV and a road trip machine.
For the price and segment it sits in, the Crosstrek also nails down the features list. Standard features on the base model include a 7-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a four-speaker audio system, and a USB-A port. Stepping up to the Premium trim unlocks a larger touchscreen, 2 more speakers, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Depending on the trim and options picked, you can also expect adaptive cruise control, a 10-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system, leather-trimmed upholstery, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat.

All Subaru Crosstrek models are powered by a 2.5-liter boxer engine producing 180 horsepower, which is mated to a CVT. Like other Subaru SUVs of 2026, the Crosstrek also features all-wheel drive as standard. With a 0 to 60 miles per hour time of 8.1 seconds in the Limited trim, the Crosstrek isn’t about all-out performance. However, you can step up to the hybrid trims that feature two additional electric motors, bumping the power output to 194 horsepower. While this is still not fast, it is said to feel more responsive around town.
The Crosstrek makes up for the lack of peppy performance with good fuel economy. The EPA estimates 29 miles per gallon combined on the base model, which is dropped down to 26 miles per gallon on the Wilderness trim. For those looking for even better fuel economy, the Crosstrek Hybrid is estimated to return 36 miles per gallon, which Subaru claims is 38 percent better than conventional models, at least when it comes to city fuel economy.
The Crosstrek is built to go the distance, too, and it ranks first in the category, according to iSeeCars. It features plenty of robust and reliable features for challenging terrain. Unlike Subaru’s sporty WRX, the Crosstrek’s on-road personality is said to be relaxed and soft-riding. So, while it may not be as enthusiastic as the CX-30 or Volkswagen Taos, it can do more off-roading.
The Crosstrek gets its off-road creds thanks to its standard Symmetrical AWD system, which should add confidence in bad weather and bad roads. Additionally, the SUV has 8.7 inches of ground clearance on standard models and comes standard with hill-descent control and hill-start assist features. Step up to the Wilderness trim, and you unlock 9.3 inches of ground clearance, aggressive all-terrain rubber, and a rugged design that looks the part.
