The United States and Iran have reached an agreement in principle that envisages the resumption of the operation of the Strait of Hormuz, a US official said, reports The New York Times.
The terms of the agreement have not yet been finalized, so it is not clear whether Iran will retain any control over the strait and to what extent. In addition, it is unclear whether it will gain the right to charge for the passage of ships or will lose this opportunity completely.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Sunday that his country is ready for very serious negotiations over Iran's nuclear program, provided that Iran reopens the Strait of Hormuz. On the same day, a US representative reported a preliminary agreement, according to which the Strait of Hormuz could be reopened, provided that Iran agrees to destroy its highly enriched uranium stockpile.
President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that the US would continue the naval blockade of Iran until the parties sign an agreement. According to the American leader, the negotiation process is developing in a constructive and organized manner, but the American side does not intend to accelerate the achievement of agreements.
