The first season of the Gladzor Premier League officially kicked off Wednesday at Ararat Valley Country Club. The inter-university cricket tournament is organized by Yerevan Gladzor University with the support of the Embassy of India in Armenia.
The tournament brings together Indian students from different universities in Armenia, who compete against one another in cricket matches. Beyond trophies and medals, however, the event aims to promote sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, and student engagement while creating a vibrant and friendly university atmosphere.
According to the organizers, the initiative was created by Indian students themselves.
Jora Jhangiryan, Rector of Yerevan Gladzor University, noted that the university was pleased to support the students’ idea.
“This is their initiative, and we simply welcome the idea and are happy that they organize such events because, as people often say, sport brings people together and creates warm relationships between them. We are glad that our students preserve the Indian community, and I believe that maintaining that community in Armenia is a very important responsibility. When young people come together and enjoy themselves, then life is worth living,” he said.
The tournament was also attended by Aditya Kumar Pandey, Second Secretary of the Embassy of India in Armenia, who praised the initiative and emphasized the importance of combining education with sport.
“Yerevan Gladzor University is organizing this event, and I think it is a very good idea. Sport is very important alongside education. Introducing cricket to Armenia is wonderful, and I am very grateful that this tournament is being held in Yerevan. We hope that this tournament will continue in the future, because popularizing cricket is truly important, and this is the first time such an event is taking place in Armenia,” he said.
Before starting the match, Aditya Kumar Pandey, Jora Jhangiryan, and representatives of both the Embassy and the university also tried their cricket skills on the field, encouraging and cheering on the participants.
The tournament will continue Thursday at Ararat Valley Country Club.
