Chinese authorities are cautiously assessing the months-long Iran conflict as a factor that has potentially strengthened their negotiating position, sources say, CNN reports

The war did not go according to US President Donald Trump’s script. Instead of a demonstration of the power of the American military, the conflict turned into an unpopular and seemingly insoluble confrontation with grave consequences for the global economy. All this is happening ahead of the midterm elections in the US, which promise to be extremely difficult for Trump.

The sources claim that the current situation provides China with a unique opportunity to succeed. The US president, apparently, is extremely interested in presenting American voters with tangible victories; in particular, China’s large-scale purchases of American agricultural products and Boeing aircraft.

Beijing is ready to use its huge domestic market and dominant position in the rare earth metals supply chain to achieve its conditions.

The US should officially disagree with—instead of the previous not supporting—Taiwan’s independence.

Easing restrictions on the export of high-tech products to China.

Removing Chinese companies from US sanctions lists.

The sources also note that Beijing sees this summit between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping as a unique opportunity to secure a more stable and long-term relationship with its main economic and military rival.
