Saudi Arabia is discussing a non-aggression security agreement between Iran and Middle Eastern countries once the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran has fully ended, the Financial Times reports.
According to the newspaper, citing an unnamed Arab diplomat, the pact would be modeled on the 1975 Helsinki Accords, which the United States and European countries signed with the Soviet Union and its allies.
The diplomat said that whether an agreement is reached “all depends on who takes part in it.”
“Without Israel, it could be counterproductive, because after Iran they are considered the biggest source of conflict. But Iran is not going anywhere, and that is precisely why the Saudis are pushing for this,” the media outlet quoted the diplomat as saying.
Two other sources interviewed by the publication also expressed skepticism that the United Arab Emirates would join such an agreement.
The UAE maintains close ties with Israel after signing the Abraham Accords on the normalization of relations in 2020.
