A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck near Honaunau-Napoopoo on Hawaii’s Big Island late Friday night, and the state volcano observatory carried out an assessment of Kilauea volcano, Reuters reported, citing the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, is located on Hawaii’s Big Island.
The volcano has been erupting periodically since December 23, 2024. Earlier on Friday, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory of the U.S. Geological Survey (HVO) said the next eruption would occur sometime between May 24 and 27, based on forecast models.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake was strongly felt on the islands of Hawaii, Maui, and Oahu and occurred at a depth of about 23 km.
According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, no tsunami is expected as a result of the earthquake, and no reports of damage or casualties had been received.
