For years, it was common knowledge that Harley-Davidson motorcycles held their value better than pretty much any other brand. While this remains true for some more sought-after models, a combination of shifting consumer trends and an industry-wide slump has resulted in used values plummeting across the board. Luxury motorcycles like Harleys have also been the hardest hit.
While this news might be a little bleak for those of us who recently bought a new bike, it is great news for buyers looking for a bargain. Today, there are several bikes on the used market that offer impressive value. All the bikes listed below are still on sale, and in some cases, you can save as much as $10k if you are willing to consider a used option.
Buying a used motorcycle always has an element of risk attached, so please do your research and proceed with caution. The motorcycles on this list go from oldest to newest.
Discover the Harley models engineered for the long haul, with proven engines and designs that make six-figure mileage the norm, not the exception.
As a rule, getting any CVO touring model is going to be a pretty expensive endeavor. The latest CVO Street Glide will set you back over $40k once you get out the door, and to the right buyer, the kind of luxury it has on offer might be worth the expense. For the rest, it might be worth looking at a 2019 model, which costs almost half as much, and is most certainly not half the motorcycle.
The Street Bob represents the ultimate blank canvas. It is one of those bikes that begs to be customized, and the downside to this is that finding a bike that has been customized to your taste may prove to be a little challenging. If you are able to find one that has been equipped with the kind of mods you like, then it could be a bargain. Finding one that hasn’t been customized is possible, but it will, in all likelihood, cost more.
In terms of Harley-Davidson touring models, the Street Glide actually offers a lot of value, but if you are willing to sacrifice a few horses, there are some serious bargains to be had on the used market. The new bike gets a Milwaukee-Eight 117 as opposed to the 107 that you will find in the older bike. The actual difference in power is only incremental, while the difference in price most certainly isn’t.
If I had deep pockets, this would be way up on my list of motorcycles I want in my garage.
Over the years, the Fat Boy has evolved into something of an American icon. While the original model was famed for its presence, the newer bikes have some serious bite to back up all that bark. The 2021 model was already equipped with the 114 motor and offers more than enough power for any cruiser enthusiast.
Harley-Davidson has always had a complicated relationship with liquid-cooled motorcycles. No matter how good the Revolution Max 1250T V-twin engine really is, the core fanbase wants an air-cooled V-twin. The Sportster S was not developed for that core fanbase; it was developed to attract new riders to the brand and is a bike that can appeal to anyone in the market for a fun, fast motorcycle. The first year model certainly had a few teething issues, and it is important to make sure the necessary recall work has already been done under warranty.
This is a high-revving rebel with sports bike bones and tech that’s turning tradition on its head
Just like the aforementioned Sportster S, the original Pan America was recalled, and it is very important to make sure all that has already been done under warranty. Harley has since done away with this base model, but it offers ADV enthusiasts unrivaled bang for the buck on the used market. With 150 horsepower on tap, it is still one of the fastest adventure bikes around.
With the Low Rider ST, you are basically getting the West Coast style Low Rider S cruiser with neatly integrated luggage. If anything, the additional luggage makes the bike look even better. It is a popular model, and Harley is not shy to charge for it, but if you are willing to consider a used option, you can save around $8k, which buys a lot of accessories, including a passenger seat if you want.
The Low Rider ST is one of the most popular Harley-Davidson cruisers today. But does it live up to the hype?
Three-wheelers get a lot of flak for some reason, but trikes exist for a purpose. Unfortunately, they are also frightfully expensive. But, with these being niche offerings, it stands to reason that they don’t really hold their value. While $22k is nothing to sniff at, it makes the used trike a fair bit more accessible than a new one.
After a brief hiatus, the Breakout returned to the lineup in 2023. Aside from a few new color options, it has remained more or less unchanged since its reintroduction, and with potential savings of up to $6k, it represents great value on the used market. Naturally, this custom cruiser with forward controls is not going to be for everyone.
While the Nightster recently benefited from a serious price reduction, the Special offers several nice-to-have features, at least one of which is a passenger seat. While it won’t net you as many savings as the other bikes on this list, getting an almost new Special for the same price as the base model is a pretty good deal. It is also worth noting the fact that by 2023, Harley had already fixed the issue that forced a recall for earlier models.
